Poem: "A Fountain of Energy"

Well, I muffed the poll for the free epic, since someone helpfully pointed out that "Once the Avalanche Has Begun" is already posted. Sorry about that.

This leaves us with "A Fountain of Energy" which is spillover from the October 7, 2025 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] goatgodschild. It also fills the "Unstable" square in my 10-1-25 card for the Fall Festival Bingo. This poem belongs to the Rutledge thread of the Polychrome Heroics series.

January+ Anime PTW 2

Used my anime TBR boardgame.

I finished 7/7 for my last challenge and had a good time! I am sick so I dunno how this game will go. 😪

Roll #1:

A 5, prompt: classic anime. Slayers would work here I suppose.

Roll #2:

A 4, prompt: supernatural element. I'll go ahead and do more Babanba Banban Vampire because what was that cliffhanger.

Roll #3:

A 10, oldest on list. If I'm just looking at my CW list, that would be Digimon Adventure, specifically 02. It's a little confusing because of the weird tracking on my part, plus my last entries in 2010 stopped at the end area of the first series. *shrug* I'll just start watching where I last tracked for 02 and wish for the best. I actually think I remember that I stopped around where Kaiser's digimon helped the 'digidestined' to try and help Ken change?

Roll #4:

A 3, prompt: isekai. I had to pick from my PTW list and I agonized and removed a couple 'why is this even here' things before realizing that I could finally just watch the next season of My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!!

Roll #5:

A 6, prompt: entertainment industry. How about more Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love Revolutions, I vaguely remember what happened last..

Roll #6:

A 4, and I'm taking a chance and using my skill to land me on the generate from PTW tile. A #40 which isss Bikkuriman! I'll write more on what I know of it when I watch it.

Roll #7:

...Are you kidding me. A 10 which is RIGHT BEFORE the finish. Prompt: historical. Legend of Exorcism. The next roll was a 6 but I will not be choosing a reward since there were so many anime this time. I'm going back to blowing my nose and being miserable now.

Most looking forward to: My Next Life as a Villainess?
Least looking forward to: Slayers

Snowflake (days 12-13)

two log cabins with snow on the roofs in a wintery forest the text snowflake challenge january 1 - 31 in white cursive text

Challenge #12: Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life. Appreciate them in bullet points, prose, poetry, a moodboard, a song... whatever moves you!

This was a hard one! I would feel weird addressing specific individual people, and I feel like I’ve covered the general feeling of this in the “fandom love letter” post. There are a couple of specific groups I could talk about, but actually I’ve already talked about them on previous Snowflakes, [community profile] westerosorting back in 2014 (everything I wrote there is still true, except that I’ve met 2 additional people in person <3) and [community profile] westerosorting again and Best Chat (which grew out of [community profile] westerosorting) in 2022 – and the Best Chat is still going strong, with additional exciting in-person meet-ups (I have now also met [personal profile] tabacoychanel in person, after 15+ years of online friendship, got to crash at [personal profile] cafemassolit’s place in a second country, and got to live together with 80% of Best Chat for a couple of days, bash’ style) and the most amazing birthday card.

But what do I actually write about this time without it being a rehash? I liked the approach some people took of addressing this challenge to fandom resources or collections or platforms – DW, AO3, Tumblr, Reddit, TV Tropes… but I think there’s only one such thing I truly feel strongly about (you’re reading it), and that not purely as a fannish resource.

So here’s my thing: I’m going to appreciate the people who enhanced my fandom life not in fannish spaces (which I’ve written about many times), but out in the Real Life wilds )

In many cases this was a momentary interaction, or a couple of shared hours of fannishness, or a shared nod of recognition in a relationship that has nothing to do with fandom, but all of them were memorable bright spots, and all the more so for coming in unexpected places. So in addition to the wonderful fannish spaces and fannish relationships that I've been lucky enough to cultivate, I also appreciate these moments of fannish serendipity. They enhance my fandom life, too :)

Challenge #13: TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

By this point I think the only fannish DW communities I participate in are seasonal ones like [community profile] fandomtrees, (lurking in) the Yuletide comms ([community profile] yuletide/[community profile] yuletide_admin), or [community profile] snowflake_challenge itself (which additionally are all kind of clumped together October through January and dormant the rest of the year. I can’t seem to get the hang of Discord, even for fannish things I absolutely adore, like Terra Ignota.

So really my only current continuous fannish community is r/Taskmaster – and while Reddit is not my preferred way of doing fandom AT ALL, it is a really fun comm.

What you’ll find there )

While I’m at it, let me link to a recent rec I came across through r/Taskmaster: this super fun fanart series with cartoonish headshots of contestants (so far up to s16, but the rest coming soon).

Weekly-ish Update, 1/25/26

It's been a week of not much, or so it feels. A lot of going to work and being told to go home early because there's nothing to do and there's no sense in wasting the budget to have me sitting around doing nothing but studying. (We're not usually paid for CE, so I'm really getting as much in as I can while it's quiet and I'm getting paid, lol.) My appointment who rescheduled flaked again - I even called him and was like, hey, what's the what, and he said "oh I thought it was at four" so I said, cool see you at 4. And did he show up at 4? No, no he did not.

Health stuff has gone nowhere, other than me booking my blood test - there weren't any morning appointments until next week though, which kinda sucks. No word on referrals for anything yet though.

Good-ish news - the Methodists aren't closing just yet, so I will probably have one more month of playing piano there, which is good for my bank account. Especially since my hours at the tax office are lacking and I have no appointments scheduled. I can't even do my OWN taxes (or mom's for that matter) because I don't have W-2s or 1099s.

Started looking into info on power of attorney since the parentals are both getting older and actually admitting to forgetting things now. It seems both simple and complicated at the same time. I should probably talk to the bro-ski about it too. It's not something I want to have on my own plate all by my lonesome.

Shakes this week, and then Hamlet at the end of the week, and no official work until Wednesday. Might do some work for the other gig I picked up, might do some work for mom, might try to get some stuff together for the Escapade art show. Do have plans to get rocks identified tomorrow afternoon, which means I will then be able to get rid of them hopefully.

Still watching The Immortal Ascension, which continues to be amusing. Finally finished Vengeance of the Mountain Deity, the ending of which was very WTF after a relatively reasonable storyline. Where was my mountain deity? Ah well, it was fluffy and fun.

Goals for the Week: Survive. Write up talking points for new tax laws. Let myself enjoy the Hamlet experience.

Good Things: warm laundry. Ginger snaps (I caved and bought some). New Z1L photos.

"this is just a moonlight-soaked, ring of smoke, right hand on a cold one confession" (fgl)

I have a lot of plants. That's what I thought when I woke up this morning and stared at my very out-of-focus wall of greenery. (I never have to turn on lights anymore. All of the plant lights are on timers this year, and they start coming on down the hall around 6:30, a kind of artifical rolling dawn as one timer after another ticks over.)

I spent all of last year journaling daily in Chinese to hit my [community profile] inkingitout goal, and it may have worked: it now feels so much easier to write 500 words in Chinese that apparently I have energy left over to journal in English as well. So far I haven't written about the same thing in both journals once, not by design but just out of sheer verbosity.

journaling and ADHD )

speaking practice, and LLM-as-AI chatbots, including Duolingo )

In conclusion, the [community profile] snowflake_challenge. Dreamwidth, I appreciate you tremendously, as I hope I indicated above somewhere in my ramble about journaling. And also youtube, which I was going to use as a lead-in to the speaking challenge, but since it's now at the end, here are three insights that youtube has (usually accidentally) given me about language learning.

youtube and language learning )

Which brings me to my favorite part which is, I watch the occasional vlog in English, just for variety, and do you know how smart these kids are? It really bolsters my faith in humanity to see people being thoughtful and competent and insightful on youtube. And everywhere. So thanks, internet communities. You make my life so much better.

Having Fun Yet?

Not really. Not with the latest murder in Minneapolis, a city I have connections with and memories of. I flinched when I heard the gun shots that killed Alex Pretti yesterday. So very loud.

Only a couple of weeks earlier, again in Minneapolis, Renee Nicole Good, was killed by ICE. Her last words were "I'm not mad at you guys." After - after - she was shot, one of the ICE agents called her a "fucking bitch." Professional attitude there, buddy.

But let's not forget others who were shot, either killed or injured, across the country.

Last September, undocumented immigrant Silverio Villegas González, a 20-year resident of Franklin Park, was killed by ICE thugs in that Chicago suburb, after dropping off his children at school. The narrative from ICE was one we're very familiar with now: he "severely injured" an ICE agent, and dragged the agent with his car.

That agent told his buddies at the scene of González' murder that his own injury was "nothing major." Oops.

American citizen Marimar Martinez was shot five times by CBP agent Charles Exum, who later boasted about it in texts to friends. She survived, and charges against her were dropped. It turns out that she didn't ram any agent's car. Someone rammed her car. Quel surprise.

There have been at least eight other shootings by ICE or CBP agents across the country since last September, of U.S. citizens, and non-citizens. They were lucky enough not to be killed, but some of them are still in ICE custody.

They were all domestic terrorists who used their vehicles to ruthlessly hunt down blameless ICE and CPB agents. At least, that's the message that ICE Barbie and her Trumpian buddies like Greg Bovino have repeatedly given out at press conferences. Not only are they lying, they're not even creatively lying.

Can we have the midterms next week, please, before That Man and his criminal team figure out how to shut elections down?

No?

Well then, we'd best be on our guard.

The Friday Five

1. What type of hair do you have? (Thin, Normal, Thick, Frizzy, etc.)
Fairly thick hair that falls somewhere between wavy and curly.

2. What color is your hair currently?
It's more or less my natural color, medium brown, all over, except for a stripe down the middle of the crown that I bleach and dye. The stripe is currently orange/copper.

3. What colors have you dyed/highlighted your hair?
I've gone through the rainbow with the stripe. I used to dye it seasonally, but I've gotten out of the habit for various reasons and have been sticking to the comparatively understated copper streak.

4. If you could dye your hair any color, what would it be?
I would love to do the stripe in a proper rainbow, front to back, though I'm not sure it would end up looking like much because of the short length. I've always wanted to get a really good mossy green going, but green fades pretty much as soon as you look away from the mirror.

5. What is your hair's length?
The sides are shaved so that what I have is a tapered mohawk type arrangement, though I've never spiked it up. The remaining hair is short (above the tops of my ears at its longest point) and pushed over to one side. Depending on how I style it, it's somewhere between a mohawk, a low fade, and a comb over/side part.

To be clear, what it *actually* is is me with a couple of mirrors, clippers and scissors, and a total absence of shame or good sense. I get what I get, yes, but after quite a few years of doing this, what I get is a hatchet job that is nonetheless broadly acceptable to me.

music rec: Glorilla

I'm pretty uneducated about rap, but I go on a binge every so often, mostly of female rappers. Today I want to share one of my favorites.

Glorilla is from Memphis, Tennessee, and is primarily known for her party jams. She has released several EPs and mixtapes and finally last year her first proper album, Glorious, which is nominated for a Grammy for best rap album.

I find her charming for a bunch of reasons:
- Distinctive husky voice and a thick, delightful accent. (I love how many syllables she can put into "ass.")
- Smiley and doesn't take herself too seriously. She always comes across like she's having fun.
- Raps about a wide variety of topics in a wide variety of emotional registers. I appreciate the mix of bravado and vulnerability.
- Loves her female friends. Has them in her videos, does songs with them, does songs about them, mentions them casually in songs.
- She's also just very hot, okay. (See: Special)

Most of all, she feels effortlessly genuine. At no point does she come across like she's trying to be anyone other than who she is.

Some personal fave tracks of mine:
- TGIF, Tomorrow 2 (ft her cousin Cardi B), and F.N.F. As I said, her biggest songs are her party jams, and these are the best ones IMO. TGIF has a great beat that sounds almost apocalyptic, which makes perfect sense to me with the opening lines of It's 7pm Friday / It's 95 degrees. You're right, if it's still that hot by 7 in the evening, that DOES feel like the world is ending, lol.

- Intro to her album Glorious. It's short but really captures that sense of genuineness I get from her.

- Accent by Megan Thee Stallion ft Glorilla. Again, doesn't take herself too seriously. "I throw an R in any word that got a U in it" is an accurate description of her accent. Incredible.

- Don't Deserve is Glorilla rapping about and to a friend whose boyfriend doesn't treat her well. I really like how this isn't just a "he's shit, hurry up and dump him" song, but has lines like It's time to find yourself again, this n* got you lost / You can do it, friend, I know you can, my fingers crossed. There's a lot of empathy in it, along with the concern.

- Wrong One, a collab with Glorilla and four other female rappers. Another one where it feels like everyone's having a good time, and gave me some more female rappers to look up. The music video is delightful.

Snowflake Challenge 13: Community

Snowflake Challenge 13: Community

We spend a lot of time in fandom talking about community, and we mean a lot of different things by it. And that’s okay! I’m always interested in what other people think about community in fandom, and especially – considering the online nature of so much of fandom -- what are the places and groups that create/allow/encourage that community. These could be flashfic or challenge communities that encourage fanwork creation, discords for talking about the latest episode of your favorite show, exchanges, promptfests, watch-alongs, live streams… whatever promotes community for you.

Today’s challenge:

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community
