SNOWFLAKE CHALLENGE 2019 – DAY 1
I don't normally make new years resolutions. But this year I promised myself to spend at least 30 minutes a day on writing or some other creative endeavor. I've kept to it so far, but am feeling sort of uninspired at the moment... And then I remembered the Snowflake Challenge! So I'm going to participate in the hope that a couple of weeks of filling a prompt each day will kick m creativity into gear. :) (Also, with the loss of Tumblr I thought I'd try to get back into using DW more regularly, so hopefully this will help with that too!)
Day 1
In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.
I'm going to have to say that my main happy place is fandom; just fandom in general. I am very much a homebody, and we bought and moved into our own house this year, so home is also a place I feel happy and safe but... fandom trumps home, for the simple reason that today's technology has made it portable. :3
This year is my 20th year in fandom. Throughout those years, it's been a safe harbor throughout a lot of real life things - it's been a place where I found lasting friendships, a creative outlet, a place to share and discuss ideas, a support network through some really rough times, a place where canon and fanworks has helped me escape the real world and let me breathe. The place I discovered my sexuality, the place that shaped a lot of my political beliefs and social activism. Growing up with a narcissistic parent who never understood why I cared so much about issues that "don't affect me", fandom was the first space I felt like people understood me; and even though I've had some negative fandom experiences, too, interacting with other fans keep reawakening that feeling, which really helps on days when I feel super-anxious about interacting with people.
Hmmm.... I think I accidentally wrote half a love-letter to fandom here. I guess I'll end up rehashing it if that's a prompt this year. xD
