It was a good day. I actually slept 6 straight hours without waking up. People were in lab and engaged. I bounced early and thought well it's still sunny, let me do the laundry today (I do it on the weekend) and then go to Jackson for gas/food things I don't have, don't need, but want.

I have big heavy clothes so I need all three washers including the hated front loader. I plug in my quarters and go to turn it on cool water instead of blazing hot and...someone has broken off the temperature control knob. Well that's fun.

Put quarters in the big heavy sheets one and realize...it says out of order in small letters on the screen. Won't give me back my quarters and I REALLY want the sheets clean if the power goes out this weekend. Now I'm yanking stuff from the middle washer before it gets wet and shove the sheets in.

Go to the car to run to Jackson while this washes. My battery dies. I'm praying it's the battery (AGAIN) and not my alternator. Call AAA. It'll be at least an hour (well at least now I can finish laundry before leaving. Call Dad to wish him a happy birthday and tell him I'm stranded in the RV park's back alley (AGAIN. My battery has died back here before). He arrives an hour later and he has the big wrecker that could haul three cars. I feel bad as he has to back it out.

I race my dead-battery to Auto Zone and the guy looks at me we can't replace them in a honda CR-V. What? You have before. What year is it 2015. Oh, yeah we CAN do that. Over 2018 we can't because if you make one mistake which is too easy to do and the computer dies. I have never heard of this and resolve to ask Dad who obsesses over cars and he has a CR-V too (he had never heard of it and is now on a mission to find out) Frick and Frack might just be incompetent because he couldn't even get the housing off my battery and needs to get his coworker. He manages it. The terminal cover snaps off. he drops the battery in sideways, barely gets it back out. I drive off 230$ poorer just happy they didn't destroy my car (try Advanced Auto next time. Also they couldn't find me in the system. I've been there so many times....)

Kroger's of course is a nightmare. And the assholes in Jackson jumped the gas price over 30 cents since the day before (should have got that at work where they haven't) I get all kinds of things I can eat cold if the power goes out. That'll be tomorrow morning's excitement. I go to the library to get the book that was on hold.

I get home and my computer is off. Did I already once?!? Nothing else is blinking but firefox and edge both say thanks for updating so I think an update was forced.

I bought myself Archway Ginger snaps as a treat. They one of the few processed cookies I actually like. I now have a tons of salami, PB&J, and hard boiled eggs plus apples. I will have food.

Saying a little prayer for everyone's power.

But there was one good thing today beside Dad liking the gift I gave him. It's also my book birthday. Check it o ut!!

Even in a generally friendly forest, not all trees are pleased to have visitors, however polite, and he had managed to choose poorly on every possible level when he decided to carve his initials somewhere. The strategically dropped seed pods and small sticks failed to deter him, and even a wind-whipped branch across the backside only made him fumble the pocket knife for a moment. Even cranky trees may have friends of their own, though, and the creature that padded up behind him on silent paws was quite happy to leave some marks of its own in retribution for its arboreal associate.

We get to see Iori and Reo's first encounter. Iori answered his calls for help and then took him in.

Whenever his mother was around, he was selfish and spoiled to a fault, wanting to reaffirm that she cared about him despite her absence. Eventually, she stopped coming home altogether; then, his father vanished, too, and when he did, he left behind a mountain of debt with which Reo got saddled. Reo was the only one left, and he soon spent his days being hounded by debt collectors.

I understand why Reo and Satsuki get along the least now. They started off on the wrong foot and have different ways of communicating. But it seems Satsuki managed to draw Reo out of his shell.

One of the reasons Zen got into training so much is because of a scar? Whooa what? Zen was a straight-laced police officer who went undercover in the Suiseki?! He couldn't lie to save his life so they knew, but they took a shining to him and he learned their principles, and he ended up taking a bullet for Iori...

"Aniki, you think of me as a partner," Zen said. "Even after Yohei-san is gone, you've accepted me as your new--"

"Why do I feel like I'm dealing with a chick who's jealous of my ex-girlfriend..." Iori muttered.

Aw, the part with Hokusai, everyone loved him in the Suiseki group.

Reo was at a loss for words. He was good at people-pleasing; he had learned how to flirt and sweet talk from his father, and while that was certainly a method of winning over young people and pretty girls, it wasn't exactly how you attracted people to a festival.

Hokusai saving the day as always...

Aw, the Suiseki old man listened to Yohei's music after he left to start rapping. 😭

Hokusai's great at drawing, somehow not surprised. Reo opens up a little. They'll think we're just freeloaders. And if I can't do anything on my own, if I'm a freeloader, then there's no way I'll be able to stay here...

So the Suiseki were giving money to Alter Trigger because it was supposedly going into researching ways to use phantometal to help the heard-of-hearing communicate?? Iori had doubts though.

"Zen... you can't tell him everything or else he'll go run off and blab, but if you just tell him one thing at a time, he'll go all-out to do whatever you tell him. And he's got a whole lot of faith in me, too... he's a real interesting guy,"

Such an apt description.

So Hokusai's rap name comes from what Iori calls him, Satsuki just heard 'Gaia' from somewhere and liked it, I'm surprised Reo was able to hold back from laughing his ass off.

Satsuki rushing ahead to save Reo, my heart. 😭❤️️ And I'm even more sad about Old Man Suiseki and the others deaths now.

Reo imagining seeing all of those who died around Suiseki's grave made me tear up like daamn.

Thanks to this story I learned that yakuza are involved in summer festivals.

Akan Yatsura comes from Old Man Suiseki commenting on how the boys are. I need a bandaid for my heart now. Really good story.

We've passed the third week of January. This includes more of the dropoff days: January 17, January 19, and the third Friday.

It's good for people to make their own plans, with help if wanted or needed. Variations of "How is that working for you?" are used to gauge progress. Here's an example from Brief Action Planning with a flow chart. This concept applies to most problem-solving situations, and it's something that anyone can learn to use.

The above approach is a shorthand version of the engineer problem-solving method. It requires following several steps such as defining a problem, brainstorming solutions, testing a solution, evaluating results, and making changes if necessary.

In the category of "daily logic puzzle games": Clues By Sam. Has a fun mechanic where the puzzles get more difficult throughout the week.

In the category of "games I picked up after a long pause": A House of Many Doors.

I first got into it in 2020, but back then it had a game-breaking problem when playing on Linux. In 2025 I randomly discovered that the bug had been fixed, downloaded the game again and went a little bit insane about it for like a month.

It's very similar to Sunless Sea when it comes to the mechanics and the basic idea: you're the captain of a vehicle in a mostly-lightless world, trying to fix your crew's problems, do some trade and not get eaten by everything that goes bump in the dark. The world is a gonzo mosaic of people and objects that the titular House has at some point stolen from a myriad worlds. The tone is slightly darker than that of Sunless Sea (my track record of saying "what the fuck was that" approximately once per quest continued unabated). There is an overarching plot woven deftly into the smaller quests. (I kept the text file equivalent of a red string conspiracy board for a while, thinking that surely the patterns I was spotting couldn't mean what I thought they meant. They did.)

I still can't believe it's mostly created by one person (art, music and eventual bugfixing were done by others, but the writing and programming was all by one guy).

In the category of "games I first played in 2025": Invisible Inc.

I've seen it described as "that one moment in a heist movie when: the game" and it truly is. A small subversive spy agency in a ruthless cyberpunk world has just been almost wiped out and it's your job to get them back from the brink. This means running infiltration missions against the big corps, trying to gather whatever resources you can (and muttering "I know, Central", when the NPC director of the agency makes arch comments about your performance). The art is fantastic, the overall vibe is impeccable, the characters are... not entirely unlike Blaseball's in that you can extrapolate so much from the game mechanics and three sentences. :D

(There's also the fantastic dynamic between Central the spy boss, Monst3r the freelance tech merchant (and Central's old friend) and Incognita (the agency's AI). The specific parts that make me chew drywall are endgame spoilers, but jfc, they're a lot.)

"Slow and easy, yes, just like that. I have your head, just let your body float," Dinah said, confident and reassuring all in one.

Roy closed his eyes, his body already feeling less sore as he followed her instructions. When she'd shown up, thrown Ollie out, and told him to stay clear, Roy hadn't known what to expect. Now, living with her, Lian occupied by Oracle and Dinah's teammates, he knew he was in the best possible hands to recover.

The hot tub was set just warm enough to pull his muscles loose, salt-tanged for buoyancy, and she had him. She'd never let him fall under, while his body just floated, easing the stress of his physical therapy away. She pushed when they did it, but not so hard as to build injuries, and then… she always took care of him after.

He wasn't going to fail her, or his baby girl, by wallowing in the fear of the near-fatal shots. He would trust her, as he always had, letting her guide him. When he went back out there, he'd be as strong as he'd ever been.

It was just like when she put him back together from the drugs.

kingstoken's 2026 Book Bingo: First Person POV

The Red Chesterfield by Wayne Arthurson is a 2019 crime novella (with a touch of magical realism) about a bylaw enforcement officer, M, who finds a body while investigating an abandoned chesterfield. The incident leaves M shaken and drawn into more than one mystery as the chesterfield keeps appearing and a regular on M's route disappears. But the book is less interested in answering "whodunnit" than it is with looking at characters' decisions about getting involved in crime and drama and how priorities around family, romantic relationships, career, community, truth and justice can shift the usual narrative shape of the genre.

This is one of those books that I want to take apart with a little eyeglass screwdriver to see how it works. It's an absolute marvel of efficiency. It's only 99 pages (that exact number being by design, I suspect) with large text and several half-page chapters, but it's packed with story. It covers a lot of ground without feeling like it's moving as fast as it is. We get to know so much about who M is as a person but from a deep enough position that we skip a lot of high-level markers or exposition. This story is built on implication and inference, and the reader's principally assigned to solving the protagonist rather than the plot.

I really enjoyed this one, and I'm looking forward to checking out the author's other work.
