My partner and I moved in together last year, and this year we continued settling in. We set up bird feeders in the yard and made lots of avian friends! Here's a male Hairy Woodpecker enjoying some suet:

lignify

lignify (LIG-nuh-fai) - v., to turn into wood or into woody tissue; to become rigid or fixed like something wooden.

Can be transitive (turn something else into wood) or intransitive (turn one/itself into wood). Biologically, this is caused by formation and deposit of lignin in cell walls, which in certain plants can happen during secondary growth. I can see this being used in a P.G. Wodehouse novel, when the butler's face lignifies as the young cad prattles on, not realizing he's given himself away. This was coined in French as lignifier, from the Latin root līgnum, wood.

Snowflake Challenge 2026: Prompt 11

Snowflake Challenge: A mug of coffee or hot chocolate with a snowflake shaped gingerbread cookie perched on the rim sits nestled amidst a softly bunched blanket. A few dried orange slices sit next to it.

Challenge #11: In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5.

I've been granting wishes since Challenge #5, but unfortunately I did not closely track any of them! So you're just going to have to take my word for it that I did this one. ;)

But I will throw an invite out here, since I now have a working computer and can type AO3 comments without extended frustration and probably missed a few "please comment" wishes: if you have a specific fic you'd really like a comment on, drop it here and I'll check it out! Obviously I have my favorite fandoms, but I'll read canon-blind or original work.

Fannish webpage templates

I made a template for media/fic recs (depending on what you're looking for) that allows users to select if filters are inclusive or exclusive, and filters automatically for results. It uses Javascript, so if you want to do advanced customizations you might need a little bit of familiarity there. But you don't have to if your needs are pretty similar to the default settings, and I explain (pretty thoroughly, I like to think) how to use the code in the documentation: https://fan.kingdra.net/recs/

Installation is done directly through the live previews, and also available on Github: https://github.com/aroceu/recs-template

Image preview:

This code is usable on Neocities, Nekoweb, and anything similar!

A while back, I also wrote up CSS to make fics downloaded from AO3 as HTML files look prettier. If anyone is importing their fics from AO3 to Neocities/Nekoweb/wherever as HTML files and want to make them look nicer than the default styling, you might be interested: https://fan.kingdra.net/ao3css/

Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions, run into any bugs, whatever! ♥

Managed a few fills for 3 Sentence Ficathon season! I feel like I managed to almost have a theme here. 1 Jurassic Park, 1 Scavenger's Reign, 2 Finisterre, and 1 TMNT.

I hit Walmart while I was downtown, but only because they were running out of dog treats at the garage. (Pip’s father has taken on the task of providing treats for the dogs at the garage ever since we had our first dog, Shiloh, and Pip started taking him up as a puppy. But his dad was sick with bronchitis and missed a whole week and didn’t bring in anything this week when he came back, hence the need for me to pick something up.)

I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, emptied the dishwasher and ran another load, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. We had spaghetti for supper. I also mixed up a meatloaf for tomorrow’s supper.

I got some more writing done! ~800 words today. I’m currently at ~8,000 on this fic and will easily make the 10,000 requirement for SFBB. I watched Best Medicine and some House Hunters International.

Temps started out at 34.3(F), which was a huge surprise! (The TWC app said it was going to be 18 for the overnight low and 33 for the high, which we’ve already exceeded.) It dropped a bit to 33.1 before I left. and reached 38.7.

The forecast for the snow storm has changed, but not for the better. Now they’re calling for 5-8" during the day Sunday, 5-8" overnight, and 1-3" on Monday. Really DNW! *cries*

I’ve heard that this storm is supposed to be massive and hit the south pretty hard, as well. I hope everyone in the path of this thing stays safe and warm.

Mom Update:

Mom was doing okay; tired, as usual. The slightest effort tuckers her out, which is really sad to see. We ate our lunch together. A friend of hers showed up while I was there and even stayed after I left. (She had to move her car so I could get out of the driveway, and sometimes she would take that as an excuse to leave, but she didn’t today.)

Sister S called while I was there and told mom she was bringing down supper for her. Meatloaf, which mom loves. She was looking forward to it, but afraid she wouldn’t be able to eat it.

Missed participating last year in "Three for the Memories 2024", as too much stuff was happening back in Jan 2025. So I wanted to be sure to participate again this year.

First photo is from July 4th when we were visiting family in NC. Hubby had parked our car on his mom's lawn to leave room for everyone else visiting to park in her driveway. Everyone meets up at her house to see the fireworks because the city sets them off on the property adjacent to hers since she lives on top of the hill overlooking town. And this picture just reminded me of a Subaru Outback advertisement.
