Meme: 30 Days of Hanson - Day 15
Jul. 2nd, 2010 05:40 pmDay 15: Favorite live performance
Oh, urm. These are all so hard! ><
Ok, I want to do to do one from today and one old school. Ok so today's one can just really only ever be this (we all know why):
Old school... it's that high note... - and the fact that they just go out there and sing despite the boos (I think most kids their age would have run off crying...) - and the fact that the crowd is cheering by the end haha.
Tied for first on the old school side because this has been one of my favourites for a long, long, long time... (how cute is Zac in this?! That and Tay's smile at the start still makes me melty 13 years later...)
Some others I love:
<333333
Ah... the clapping! Memories, memories...
This is when I really started to love Ike as much as the other two. (Sorry Ike. :( I can't believe I liked you less before!)
Well it's one of my favourite songs and this performance is amazing.
I love watching Zac's drumming in this tehe - and Ike's singing is amazing too. And Tay's piano playing ofc. :)
*chills, chills, chills* Man those harmonies <333333
*sigh* ... Zac if you are going to keep being so amazing you need to find a way to clone yourself so we can all have a copy, thanks.
This just happens to be one of my favourite songs ever and they do it so well!
Just really... yeah.
Ok so the audio quality is worse in this than the 5 of 5 ofc but I like how Zac looks here as well as his performance, so shoot me!
Nice shirts Ike and Tay! And Tay cracking up at the start always makes me smile haha
Well the whole PsykoBlast really - that crowd still gives me chills, but I am gonna put Mmmbop up cause I still love when Tay does his little breather thing at the start... ^^
Tehe, Zac is a little screaming drumming machine in this lol!
Always loved these covers - and River as well. ^^
Ok I think I'm gonna stop here or this will end up being a thread full of every single performance of anything they're ever done haha.

And I LOVE the I Want You To Want Me Clip so hard! He sounds so frigging good. And his clapping and stuff oh gosh. I think that's when I really started to fall for Zac haha.

Date: 2010-07-03 03:44 pm (UTC)Meanwhile I'm like nodding up and down repeatedly and super-fast and all "J...just...F...f...FIIIINE!" and trying not to drool. ;) I feel like I'm 13 again or something, and speechless.
He knows *exactly* what buttons he's pushing, and when! "Why thank you for the concern, Taylor. No problems to report here!"

Date: 2010-07-03 04:07 pm (UTC)Taylor is a very natural performer, actually even when you watch prefame clips he has always been good at crowd interaction. Zac has his moments too but Taylor is normally the one keeping the audience the most connected. :)

Date: 2010-07-03 12:41 pm (UTC)Actually they were using triggers for Zac's drumming a lot in that era (he talked about it later in a "Modern Drummer" magazine interview) to help him out (like the fast bass drum stuff that'd be pretty hard for an 11-year-old to do) - he'd hit a box with his foot and it'd count him off in the headphones and provide more of the drum track, so that's why he was always counting them in. Since drummers do this counting-in for bands anyways, it didn't seem at all unusual or out of place! I only mention all this (lol) because it's a big problem if Tay starts too slow on the piano line because he's off from the clicks and pre-determined tempos, and it's a problem because Zac has to match the set tempo. The song gets back to its tempo pretty quickly.
And that "Madeline - Acoustic" performance was long one of my favorites, even from way back in the day when it was posted on Hansonhouse.com! I loved Tay's smile too. I also liked that whole "Here we go 'round again" pre-chorus (aka "transitional bridge", thanks Wikipedia for that one!) section starting at 2:16. On the album, it's a fave too because I like the vocal contrast between the "call & answer" thing with Zac and Tay. Clever vocal arrangement.

Date: 2010-07-03 03:01 pm (UTC)Yeah I remember reading that Modern Drummer article - I found it so interesting! I really like hearing about the technical sides of their music and performances and just generally when they talk about their music (it's why the Kidd Kraddick one became my favourite interview ever as soon as I watched it!) - but most times they get asked about personal or trivial stuff... I guess the majority of people want to know that but yeah I find it that much more interesting to know about stuff to do with their music and the band related to that!
I have loved that Madeleine performance since I first saw it. And it's one of my favourite songs as well, it's very well arranged I'll agree there. And Zac's little backing vocals are just... ohhh. And yeah, Tay's smile and Zac just being so tiny and cute on top of the awesome song makes it such a great clip!
And reminds me how Zac grew so fast :( He was this tiny for less than a year and he was so cute. Even if I'm glad he turned out to be so frigging hot I sometimes miss little cute as a button Zac haha.

^ Yeah! They handled that really well.
And you know what? They talk about any performer (actor, musician) completely "selling" a performance, and that's the huge thing that resonates with me when I see this clip again (it'd be a long while!). I think Tay really completely "sold" this performance. At 39 seconds, you can almost palpably "feel" the tide of opinion in the audience change. I mean, Ike's intro is fine, an average voice, Zac's is little-kid and a bit pitchy, but at 39 seconds, Tay comes in with that soulful interpretation and that husky changing-voice that he still has control over, and I think some of his singing is the best of the three of them in this clip. The audience is like "Woah, maybe these guys really CAN sing."
The booing actually didn't surprise me in that era in the least, I remember thinking at the time. There was kind of a backlash against something so sunny as "MMMBop" (and then "Where's The Love") as singles and the fact they were played so much on radio, and a backlash against "manufactured" boybands of the era (Backstreet Boys, etc.) which some (uneducated!) audience members might've thought Hanson fit into, and a lot of radio was dominated by that post-alt-rock/post-grunge kind of sound. Plus it's like "What are these freakin' *kids* going to give us in an anthem performance, why don't you get a real experienced singer?". But as the performance goes on, the tide turns and it finished with people probably thinking, "You know, that's actually pretty good. They're pretty good." Or at the very least, "Meh, it didn't suck like I thought it would." :)

Date: 2010-07-03 03:50 pm (UTC)Taylor's singing is definitely the strongest here, between him and their wonderful harmonies they just nail it! I agree, the audience opinion does change really quickly.
I understand why people bood them as well. I mean I totally 100% still understand people's reluctance to give Hanson much credit. The music industry has become so fake and for non fans that know nothing of their struggles and their career before and after being signed to a major label, I really understand. But I wish people would open their ears and at least give them credit for actually being true to their music and being credible musicians.
Aaaaanyway, tangent. I was going to say, I also understand it because so many stars before them and since have completely massacred that anthem. Especially when pop stars come out there and do it. Yeah, I doubt people were expecting to feel like proud American's having some kids sing the national anthem. I know I wouldn't - especially if all I knew about them was Mmmbop!
I'm glad they prooved themselves though. :)
Actually, this was on billboard today: http://www.billboard.com/#/column/viralvideos/10-worst-national-anthem-performances-ever-1004101877.story?tag=hpflash3 Some of these are so awful. And I'm not even American and feel embarrassed lol.
